Jim Ramstad, Congressman for Minnesota’s Third District, has been invited to be theramstad1 guest speaker at the Senate District 41 Republican Full Committee Dinner Meeting on Tuesday, October 28 at Calvary Lutheran Church located at 6817 Antrim Road in Edina. He also is at the beck and call for Senator John McCain’s Presidential Campaign. If he is unable to attend, there will be a speaker to inspire us for the final week of the campaign.

On September 17, 2007 Representative Jim Ramstad announced his retirement after twenty-seven years - ten years in the Minnesota Legislature and seventeen years in the U.S. Congress. Jim decided that it is more important at this time to spend more time with his wife Kathryn, family and friends and pursue other interests. Jim feels that it is time to see more of the Gophers, Vikings, T-Wolves and Twins and to start living life after Congress.

Before he left Congress, he did get the support needed for the mental health and addiction treatment parity bill as it was attached to the Economy Stimulus Package that Jim signed on the second go around.

Jim Ramstad was first elected to Congress in 1990. He is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Health Subcommittee, and Oversight Subcommittee. Jim also co-chairs the Addiction Treatment and Recovery Caucus, as well as the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus, Law Enforcement Caucus, and Medical Technology Caucus.

Congressman Ramstad was the 1998 recipient of the "Fulbright Distinguished Public Service Award." Jim was also named "Legislator of the Year" in 1998 by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselors, in 1999 by the National Mental Health Association and in 1997 and 2000 by the National Association of Police Organizations.

Jim Ramstad was born in Jamestown, North Dakota and now lives in Wayzata with his wife

Wrap Up of September 30 Full Committee Meeting

Lynn Swon asked us to observe a moment of silence in memory of her husband, John Swon III who passed away on September 2. She than announced our next Full Committee Meeting will be on October 28. Pat Bottini from the Norm Coleman Campaign reported that Al Franken and Norm Coleman are now running neck and neck. He asked each of us to give one hour a week in support of the campaign. John Paul Yates, speaking on behalf of Erik Paulsen, said that he needs help as the Democrats are outspending Paulsen by a million dollars on negative ads. Daniel Azar is running for Mayor of Edina and is asking for support from us.

John Heutmaker is in charge of the Literature Drop and Marsha Chamberlain is in charge of Get Out the Vote calling. Lew Coffey asked everybody to volunteer as there are plenty of opportunities. Jerry Paar and Linda Presthus talked on Poll Challenging and asked for volunteers for the people who are interested in doing this for four hours on Election Day.

Geoff Michel, Keith Downey and Jan Schneider, our Republican-endorsed candidates, presented a united front in asking for support in helping with their campaigns before Election Day.

Our featured speaker of the evening, Gopal Khanna, Minnesota’s First Chiefkhanna_fcm Information Officer, gave a very informative presentation on why we are on the right track in information gathering in Minnesota. We attract more companies to Minnesota by having a great infrastructure and we add to the value of our state. Since 1954, when the first computer was started, the U.S. has now more technology than any other country.

He emphasized how important this was by the example of when Russia launched a cyber attack on Georgia on August 8 and tried to bring down the state. It could happen here but we have a huge advantage in being so vast and powerful. We also have an economic advantage. With the deficit coming up, we can take advantage by using the vast technology we have.

Khanna pointed out that governments can’t take risks and so they are slow to react. There is no reward for innovation in the public arena and there is zero tolerance for mistakes. There are few champions or advocates for increasing technology and yet it is an important component in making government more productive. Despite these challenges, he feels that we can downsize government and make it more effective and efficient. This very entertaining and precise picture of Minnesota technology led to lots of questions from the attendees.
